Obituary for Helen Catherine Butler (Canby)

Helen Catherine (Canby) Butler, 94, a lifelong resident Martinsburg, WV went home on July 25th, 2016 at Clary Grove Nursing Home, where she spent the last 11 years. She was born April 10,1922 in Martinsburg to the late Hunter David and Rachel Ellen (Butts) Canby.

On June 23rd, 1943 in Martinsburg, WV she married Charles David (Curry) Butler. They had four children-Douglas Thomas Butler, Joan Elaine, Linda Lou, and Barbara Ann. Charles passed away on September 12, 1956 in an unexpected car accident. She continued to raise her children on her own and never remarried.

Helen leaves behind two living children, Joan E. Mutu and husband, Nicholas, of Canton, OH and Linda L. Johnson of Martinsburg. Her only surviving sibling is Douglas W. Canby of Martinsburg, and daughter-in-law, Peggy Butler-Mason. In addition, she leaves behind 9 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in passing is her son, Douglas T. Butler (1989), daughter, Barbara A. Roach (2014) and son-in-law, Gerald "Jerry" L. Johnson. Her other siblings preceding her in death are Gold L., Oscar T., Charles C., Lula Cramer, Mary Willingham, Lillian Weir, Hunter Jr. and Edith Canby. Also, preceding her in death is 1 great grandchild.

Helen’s life consisted of loving her family and being surrounded by them. From taking care of her siblings on High Street, Swartz Street to Porter Avenue, there were many stories of growing up during the Great Depression and working in the Interwoven Mill. Her stories live on in the children and grandchildren she leaves behind.

Family and Friends will be received from 6pm to 8pm on Thursday, July 28th at Brown Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held on Friday July 29th at 1:00PM at Brown Funeral Home with Chaplain Doug Knupp officiating.
