Reuben Lucien Swope,78, of Shepherdstown, passed away Friday, April 22, 20 16 at Berkeley Medical Center.
Born on January 9, 1938 in Shepherdstown, WV, he was the son of the late Walter M. and Ruth L. Breeden Swope.
He was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Shepherdstown. He was a graduate of Shepherdstown High School class of 1957.
He retired after 38 years of service with the Maintenance Department at Shepherd University.
Reuben was a strongly independent gentleman who put others first and enjoyed spending time with his family. As an avid outdoorsman he was a lifelong hunter and fisherman.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Ann Elizabeth Whittington Swope; one daughter, Della Marie Swope-Collins; four grandchildren, Katherine McDowell, Amanda Maddox, Russell Collins, and Christina Collins; seven great grandchildren; one brother, Charles Swope, of Stephens City, Va.; and one sister, Lena Grim, of Winchester, Va.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Martin Swope; and two sisters, Anna May Richardson and Isabelle Swope.
The family will receive friends Thursday, April 28, 2016 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Brown Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Friday, April 29, 2016 at Brown Funeral Home. Interment will be held in Elmwood Cemetery, Shepherdstown.
